Netflix has already produced many major films and series that have become true pop culture phenomena. But few titles have been as crucial to the popularization of the streaming service as “Stranger Things.” Five seasons have been released between 2016 and 2025, all of which became major successes. For its tenth anniversary, Netflix has now re-released the first season—with a special feature.

Netflix without “Stranger Things” is hard to imagine. A press release from the company reveals that the series amassed an impressive 1.5 billion views by March 2026. Additionally, seasons 3 and 4 are among the most successful in the provider’s history.
For the milestone anniversary, Netflix has come up with something special and re-released the first season. The twist: “Stranger Things” now “shines” in the old VHS look, just as the series would have appeared on videotape back in the 1980s. This means it flickers and buzzes like crazy, and the picture quality is now extra grainy.

Duffer Brothers Get Emotional
The series creators Matt and Ross Duffer have made an emotional statement to celebrate:
“… we are grateful—for our amazing cast, whom we have watched grow into wonderful people, as well as for the numerous brilliant artists who have poured so much of themselves into bringing this story to life; and for you, the fans, whose dedication, patience, and passion have driven us all these years. THANK YOU!” [sic]

While the main series concluded with the fifth season, the franchise is still active. In this context, “Stranger Things” in VHS look is just the tip of the iceberg. The animated spin-off “Stranger Things: Tales From 85” has already been released and is set to receive a second season. Furthermore, another spin-off as a live-action series is planned. There is also a stage play and interactive experiences related to the brand.
