The prevailing sentiment in recent years has been that films only succeed nowadays if they are sequels or mega-franchises. Year-end lists of the highest-grossing titles have repeatedly confirmed this over the past decade. That a completely new film could break this trend is all the more gratifying. And not only that: Amazon’s “The Astronaut” has even set a new record.
“The Astronaut” Sets Record for Amazon
Only two weeks have passed since the space adventure starring Ryan Gosling hit the big screen. As the U.S. industry magazine “Variety” now reports, “The Astronaut” has set the record as the most successful production from Amazon.
The global box office has clearly surpassed 300 million dollars. That’s more than the previous leader “Creed III” from 2023—the boxing drama reached 276 million dollars at the time. Thus, “The Astronaut” is the most successful film from Amazon-MGM Studios to date—and it continues to grow. As of now (April 20, 2026), more than 570 million dollars have been earned. And this as a film that is not a sequel. To be fair, it should be mentioned that it is an adaptation of the popular book of the same name by Andy Weir.

This film has broken all records on Netflix.
Germany Has Many “Astronaut” Fans
Last weekend alone, 54.1 million dollars were added worldwide, which is a strong result for a second weekend after release. The most successful markets include China (7.7 million dollars), the United Kingdom (6.3 million), Australia (3.8 million), Germany (3.4 million), and South Korea (3.3 million).
The “Astronaut” record will grow even larger in the coming weeks. After all, the film is still playing in theaters and continues to earn money, although the pace will gradually slow down.

Amazon Doesn’t Need Theaters
According to “Fortune“, Amazon is in the luxurious position of being less financially dependent on strong theatrical releases than traditional film studios. Even Amazon-MGM’s cinema chief, Kevin Wilson, previously described theaters more as an additional marketing campaign. The main focus remains on streaming.
When “The Astronaut” will be available on Amazon Prime Video is currently unknown. However, it likely won’t be long before subscribers can enjoy the film.
