The lively toys are back! For the fifth time, Woody, Buzz, and company embark on a new adventure, and fittingly, “Toy Story 5” focuses on technological advancements entering the playroom. While the friends face an uncertain future, one thing is already clear: With its international release, Disney and Pixar have hit the mark.
“Toy Story 5” is Disney’s Most Successful Launch
As reported by the U.S. industry magazine “Variety,” numerous people worldwide went to see “Toy Story 5” in theaters last weekend. The animated film grossed an impressive $312 million globally–enough for the biggest opening ever for Disney and Pixar.
The revenue distribution is balanced: $160 million was earned in the U.S. and Canada, while $152 million came from international markets. For comparison, “Toy Story 4” achieved $120 million internationally and $238 million overall on its first weekend in 2019.
The following countries contributed significantly to the early success after the U.S. and Canada:
- Mexico – $26.6 million
- United Kingdom – $20 million
- China – $18 million
- France – $7.2 million
In Germany, “Toy Story 5” will be released much later, on July 23. Then, German moviegoers will also contribute to the growing total.
“Toy Story 5” Was Expensive to Produce
This is crucial, as the production costs were extremely high. According to the report, the budget was around $250 million. This was recouped within the first few days. However, with the marketing budget added, the film needs to generate significantly more revenue to be profitable.
However, this should not pose a major obstacle after such a spectacular start. Whether “Toy Story 5” will, like its two predecessors, surpass the magical $1 billion mark remains to be seen. So far in 2026, only the “Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has reached this milestone, according to Box Office Mojo.
The “Toy Story” brand has been a surefire hit for Disney and Pixar. Even without a new film release, the franchise generates over $1 billion annually through licensing and merchandise. Reviews for “Toy Story 5” are quite positive: 94% of all professional film reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, and 95% of fans also rate it highly.
