Even before the first season of the new “Harry Potter” series has started, HBO has already made an important decision. The story will continue, as a second season is already confirmed. This decision comes unusually early and shows how confident the executives are in the project.
Early Renewal Shows Clear Strategy
The confirmation for Season 2 comes about seven months before the planned start of the first season of the “Harry Potter” reboot. With this, HBO is sending a clear signal and showing confidence in the new version. Content-wise, the second season will pick up the storyline from “The Chamber of Secrets,” directly continuing the well-known story.
The series follows a long-term concept. According to the online magazine “Moviepilot,” the plan is to adapt all seven books into at least one season each. The project is set to span about a decade. Accordingly, the production is structured. Sets, scenery, and technical structures will be reused multiple times, as reported by the industry magazine “Variety,” to efficiently continue the elaborate filming over the years.

Filming Runs Parallel to Postproduction
According to a report by “The Hollywood Reporter,” work on the second season is set to begin while the first is still in postproduction. Filming is expected to start in fall 2026. One reason for this is the age of the young main actors, which must be considered in a long-term series.
The first season has been filming since July 2025, resulting in about 17 months of production time. If HBO aims for a similar release timeframe, the second season could be completed a bit faster. If the network maintains the planned rhythm and adapts each book into its own season, the seventh season could premiere as early as 2032.

Change in the Series’ Creative Team
With the second season, there is also a personnel change behind the scenes. Jon Brown, who was already involved as a writer in the first season, will take on the role of co-showrunner. He will work alongside Francesca Gardiner on the series. For the production, this means a division of creative responsibility between two experienced individuals. At the same time, with Gardiner remaining on board, a central figure ensures continuity.
When the second season will be released is still unknown. However, it is certain that HBO is pushing the series forward quickly and planning for the long term.
