Fans of the “Harry Potter” series have been waiting for years for new content about the young wizard. Now, HBO has released concrete material for the planned series for the first time. In addition to a trailer, there is also an official title and a set premiere date. The series aims to retell the well-known stories.
The original film series ended back in 2011. Before that, J.K. Rowling’s books had achieved great success worldwide. The film adaptations were also a global phenomenon. Later projects such as video games or musicals could not match that success. One reason is that the well-known main characters played hardly any central role in them.
New Adaptation of the Familiar Story
HBO is now focusing on a reboot of the original story as a series. Initial hints about the project emerged in 2021. In 2023, Warner Bros. officially confirmed it. Since then, there have been many speculations but few concrete details.
On March 24, 2026, HBO released a first image of the new Harry Potter, portrayed by Dominic McLaughlin, on Instagram. Shortly thereafter, a teaser trailer followed. At the same time, the title and premiere date were announced. The first season is titled “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” directly aligning with the first book.
Few Differences from the Familiar Template
The first scenes show characters like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Hagrid, and Dumbledore in a portrayal that strongly resembles the previous films. The setting of Hogwarts also appears very close to the familiar adaptation. Watching the trailer raises the question of what new approach the series can offer. Many elements seem familiar and clearly draw from the previous depiction of the story.

The series is set to premiere on HBO Max at Christmas 2026. This timing coincides with a period when major film productions like “Avengers: Doomsday,” “Jumanji 3,” and “Dune 3” are also being released.
Whether the series can hold its own against this competition remains to be seen. According to current plans, the project is expected to run over a period of ten years and retell all the novels.
