In the film and TV industry, new trends repeatedly emerge, lasting for varying durations. While comic book adaptations dominated mainstream for a long time, they now seem to be gradually replaced by video game adaptations. Remakes are also always popular–and recently, simply reruns for special occasions have gained traction. Such an occasion has now arisen for “The Fast and the Furious.”
“The Fast and the Furious” Returning to Theaters Soon
Re-releases in theaters are nothing new, but they have recently been experiencing a boom. More and more often, old classics are dusted off and brought back to the big screen–and quite successfully. Action film fans have reason to be excited: Not only are the first two “Terminator” films returning, but also the first installment of “The Fast and the Furious.”
Released in 2001, Rob Cohen’s direction laid the foundation for one of the most successful and well-known film series of today. To date, ten regular installments have been released, along with an animated series and a spin-off. Furthermore, the films have brought lasting fame to stars like Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and the late Paul Walker, who passed away in 2013.
This year, the franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary, which is why the original film will return to German theaters in modern 4K resolution as part of the “Best of Cinema” series. The special screenings will take place on September 1.
“Fast and Furious” Continues
With high-powered cars and plenty of action, few film series are more dedicated to mainstream entertainment than the “Fast & Furious” series.
Nevertheless, or perhaps because of this, the more sophisticated part of the film world has also shown respect: At the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, for instance, the ninth installment “Fast 9” was screened out of competition in the pandemic-stricken year of 2021. This set a signal for an artistic alliance between sophistication and entertainment, and for cinema itself, which needs art as much as spectacle to survive. For the 25th anniversary, the franchise was presented again in Cannes in 2026, where the first installment was also screened.
For the future, at least one more, initially final film is planned. The current title is “Fast Forever,” and lead actor Vin Diesel calls the accompanying script the best he has read in decades. He would therefore “still cry.” Additionally, at least one new TV series is currently planned.
