For decades, rumors about a film adaptation of “Diablo” have surfaced repeatedly. Now, Blizzard has confirmed the first official series adaptation of the cult game.
Blizzard Entertainment is developing an animated series for “Diablo” in collaboration with Netflix. The announcement was made at BlizzCon 2026 and marks an important step for one of the most well-known video game franchises. However, specific details about the plot or planned release date are not yet available.

Three Decades After the First Game
The first “Diablo” was released in 1996 and will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2026. The dark fantasy series is set in the world of Sanctuary, where humans are caught between the forces of Heaven and Hell. With its mix of action, loot hunting, and role-playing elements, the series quickly became one of the most successful gaming franchises ever.
The sequels also enjoy cult status to this day. Most recently, “Diablo IV” was released in 2023 as a new main installment. The brand remains one of Blizzard’s most important series and has a large fan base that has been waiting for a film adaptation for years.
An Adaptation with a Long History
The newly announced Netflix series ends an unusually long waiting period. As Polygon reports, plans for a film or series adaptation have been discussed repeatedly since the 1990s. A few years ago, there were also reports of a possible animation project at Netflix, which was never officially confirmed.
That has now changed. The new series is the first officially announced film or series adaptation of the “Diablo” universe. Whether this will lead to more projects in the long term remains open, according to Blizzard.
