When the streaming provider Disney+ launched at the end of 2019 (or in Germany in March 2020), there weren’t many series and films to choose from. The streaming provider initially offered content primarily from its own brands–and “The Mandalorian.” The first live-action “Star Wars” series was the main reason many subscribed right from the start. Disney has since expanded its offerings: With the “Star” package, many contents for an older audience have been added. More “Star Wars” series have since been released or are in planning. “The Mandalorian” as the Start of a New “Star Wars” Era

Back in 1985, the first “Star Wars” series, “Star Wars: Droids,” premiered. The short-lived animated series showcased more adventures of the iconic droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. Since then, much has happened with the brand. Series like “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” gained significant popularity and are now also available on Disney+.

In 2019, “The Mandalorian” marked the franchise’s first live-action series. Even though there were older series from the “Star Wars” universe, “The Mandalorian” signifies a new chapter. The production is set between “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens,” revealing a completely new side of the story.

Din Djarin (played by Pedro Pascal) is a bounty hunter who, as a so-called “Mandalorian,” always wears a helmet with a closed visor. Styled as a space Western, the series almost entirely omits lightsabers and shows how the unusual protagonist navigates the (far, far away) galaxy and, during a mission, rescues a child of the same species as Jedi Master Yoda. The two form an unlikely, father-son-like duo, which brought the streaming service stellar numbers right from the start.

Tales of the Empire

Inspired by the successful animated series “Tales of the Jedi,” the “Star Wars” series “Tales of the Empire” will premiere on Disney+ in 2024. In six episodes, the production explores the dark sides of the Empire from the perspective of Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth and former Jedi Barriss Offee.

The Acolyte

The lead role in the series, for which “Russian Doll” creator Leslye Headland is responsible, is set to be played by Amandla Stenberg (known for “The Hunger Games,” “Dear Evan Hansen”). The plot is known to be set towards the end of the High Republic era, about 100 years before Episode I. An initial synopsis also revealed that a former Padawan teams up with her Jedi Master to solve a dark crime.

Skeleton Crew

Little is known about this project–except that Jude Law, a major name, has already been cast! This is notable because the “Star Wars” series was originally supposed to launch on Disney+ in 2023. The series is likely set between Episode VI and VII, in the same timeframe as “The Mandalorian.” The plot is expected to center around a group of 10-year-olds searching for their way home through the galaxy.

Ahsoka

After her appearance in “The Mandalorian” Season 2, Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano now gets her own “Star Wars” series. She is still searching for the imperial Admiral Thrawn to find the missing Jedi Ezra Bridger. She is joined by another character known from “Rebels”: Sabine Wren (Lui Bordizzo).

The Adventures of the Young Jedi

This series is an animated anthology project. It follows a group of Jedi students trained by Master Yoda during the High Republic era. Their schooling involves more than just learning to fight. The old master aims to teach them values like compassion and patience, which sometimes pushes the young Jedi to their limits.

“Star Wars” Series on Disney+ 2022

Obi-Wan Kenobi

For this “Star Wars” series, both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen returned to their roles as Jedi Master and Darth Vader. After the Empire’s takeover, Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi has retreated under the alias “Ben” to the desert planet Tatooine. There, he can also keep an eye on young Luke Skywalker (Grant Feely). However, when Luke’s sister Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair) is kidnapped and Obi-Wan appears on the Empire’s radar, a chase begins. It is not yet known if there will be a sequel, but there is much to suggest a second season of “Obi-Wan Kenobi”.

Andor

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” was the first official spin-off of the series in 2016 and a huge success. As of now, it ranks fourth among the most successful “Star Wars” films of all time, following the latest trilogy with Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver. The dark blockbuster, which shows the immediate prequel to Episode IV and the theft of the Death Star plans, gets its own series spin-off with “Andor.” Diego Luna returns in the lead role of Captain Cassian Andor, and the former imperial droid K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) is also back. A second season is set to launch in 2024.

Tales of the Jedi

Not much is known about the project yet. However, it is said to be an animated anthology series that tells the stories of several Jedi Knights. Three big names are already known: Ahsoka Tano, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Count Dooku. For the “Star Wars” series, Liam Neeson will also return as Qui-Gon or his voice actor.

The Bad Batch

The animated series revolves around Unit 99, an elite squad of the clone army. Some characters are already known from the “Star Wars” series “The Clone Wars.” The story takes place during or shortly after the events of Episode III and the bloody Order 66, which nearly wipes out the Jedi Order. This animated series consists of nine standalone short films. The Book of Boba Fett

After appearing in both the films and “The Mandalorian,” the bounty hunter Boba Fett got his own live-action series in 2021. Together with Fennec Shand, he takes over Jabba the Hutt’s palace on Tatooine and faces various intrigues. The series also continues the story of Din Djarin and Grogu, aka Baby Yoda. A sequel is not currently planned.

Lando

Lando Calrissian, another popular character, is getting his own series. It will likely focus on Han Solo’s friend and smuggler companion. Not much else is known about the “Star Wars” series, except that the title character will be played by Donald Glover.

A Droid Story

C-3PO and R2-D2 return to the screens for this series. Like the animated series from the ’80s, the two droids are set to experience plenty of adventures.

Older “Star Wars” Series on Disney+

Droids

The previously mentioned “Star Wars: Droids” aired in Germany under the title “Freunde im All” (Friends in Space). The animated series gives the highly popular characters from the original film trilogy, R2-D2 and C-3PO, their own stage. The series is set before “Star Wars: A New Hope.” The two seasons aired from 1986 to 1986.

Ewoks

During the same period, another animated series was released. With “Ewoks,” the small, furry inhabitants of the forest moon also got their own “Star Wars” series. The story is set after the destruction of the first Death Star and before the construction of the new one, before Han Solo and company land on the planet.

Clone Wars

Not to be confused with “The Clone Wars”! “Clone Wars” is an animated series from the early 2000s. The storyline explores the gap between “Star Wars” Episode II and III. We follow Yoda, Anakin Skywalker, and Obi-Wan Kenobi on their Jedi missions.

The Clone Wars

War rages between the Galactic Republic and the rebellious Separatists, known as the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS). This conflict is explored from various perspectives in the longest-running “Star Wars” series, often through unrelated stories. Important characters like Ahsoka Tano became known through the series.

This animated series takes place after Episode III and thus the rise of the Empire. The orphan Ezra joins a group of freedom fighters led by a Jedi living in hiding. This Jedi also discovers Ezra’s ability to wield the Force and trains him.
