The Berlin-based manufacturer Fritz! (formerly AVM) is best known for its Fritzbox. The routers are among the most popular models in Germany. In many households, the Fritzbox serves not only as an internet gateway but also as a hub for smart home systems.
For easy operation on the go, Fritz! offers the Fritz!App Smart Home. It is available for free on Android and iOS and receives regular updates. However, a new feature is initially available only for iPhone and iPad. In the Apple App Store, Fritz! has released version 2.6.0, which introduces a new feature.
Save Energy with Automatic Shutdown
The update brings a new energy-saving feature in addition to stability and detail adjustments. According to the update description, devices in standby mode can be automatically disconnected from power completely. This is done using Fritz!’s smart plugs. Standby mode means a device appears to be off but continues to draw power. Many TVs, gaming consoles, or stereo systems consume energy even in this state.
Also of interest: Fritzbox update suddenly slows down the internet
For example, if you have your TV connected via a Fritz! plug and switch it to standby with the remote, the plug can completely cut off the power supply. The prerequisite is that the function is set up accordingly in the Fritz!App Smart Home.
Why It Can Be Worthwhile
What initially sounds insignificant can reduce power consumption in the long run. Devices like TVs, gaming consoles, or stereo systems are considered energy-hungry in standby mode. In 2023, the EU Commission required tech manufacturers to significantly reduce the standby consumption of their devices. With the new feature, users can take action themselves to further reduce energy consumption.
Also new in version 2.6.0 is an expanded energy display for smart Fritz! devices. It now allows users to select additional time periods to examine consumption more closely. When the update will be available for Android is currently unknown.
