Artificial intelligence has long been part of everyday school life. A Bitkom survey now shows that some teachers even let the technology grade student work.
The involvement of artificial intelligence in grading tests or essays and assigning poor grades is no longer just a futuristic idea. According to a representative survey by the digital association Bitkom, 20 percent of teachers use AI to check assignments and exams. The survey was conducted among 501 teachers of secondary levels I and II in Germany.
A smaller portion goes even further. Seven percent of the surveyed teachers reported having used AI for grading without subsequently reviewing the results themselves. This means the technology not only supports tasks but can directly influence the assessment of academic performance.
More Than Half of Teachers Use AI
In general, artificial intelligence already has a firm place in everyday school life. A total of 58 percent of the surveyed teachers use AI for educational purposes. Half of the respondents wish for applications that relieve them of routine tasks. Almost one in five teachers believes that AI will fundamentally change the role of schools and educators.
At the same time, there are still apparent uncertainties in dealing with the technology. Only 57 percent of teachers report clear rules for using AI at their school. Fifty-one percent even say they feel overwhelmed by the technology. Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst therefore calls for clear and actionable rules for teachers and students.
Teachers View Students’ Use of AI Critically
Many teachers are indeed critical of how students use artificial intelligence. Seventy percent consider their use of AI to be hardly controllable. However, twelve percent consciously allow the use of the technology even in exam situations.

When it comes to transparency, the judgment is clearer. Ninety-two percent of the surveyed teachers believe that students should indicate when they use AI for school tasks. These figures reveal a somewhat contradictory approach to the technology. While transparency is demanded from students in their use of AI, some teachers do not hesitate to let the technology grade work without reviewing the results afterward.
