Google Chrome is the most widely used browser worldwide. This makes the current warning from the Federal Office for Information Security all the more critical. The agency points out that the current version of the browser contains more than two dozen security vulnerabilities.

A total of 26 vulnerabilities are known, some of which are considered severe. Users should act quickly and install the latest version. On desktop computers, Chrome’s share is over 70 percent according to Statcounter.com.

Update for Windows, macOS, and Linux

The update is available for all common desktop operating systems. On Windows, macOS, and Linux, it carries the version number 146.0.7680.153 or 146.0.7680.153/154. In many cases, Chrome updates automatically in the background. You can check if this has already happened in the settings. Under “Help/About Google Chrome,” you’ll find the current version number. If necessary, the update can also be started manually here. Those who installed Chrome via the Microsoft Store can alternatively perform the update there.

The security issues do not only affect Google Chrome itself. All browsers built on the same technical foundation must also be updated. This includes Microsoft Edge, which has already received the update under version number 146.0.3856.72. Programs like Brave and Opera are expected to follow soon. Users should actively check if updates are available.

These Risks Identified by the BSI

The Federal Office classifies the known vulnerabilities as serious. Attackers can exploit the gaps to execute various cyberattacks on affected systems. According to the BSI, these include data theft, manipulation of information, and the execution of malicious code on computers. This is precisely why the agency recommends installing the provided updates as quickly as possible.
