Microsoft is expanding its free video editor Clipchamp on Windows 11 with a practical AI feature. With “Video Super Resolution,” videos with low resolution can be directly upscaled to 4K on the PC.
AI Works Directly on the Computer
According to Microsoft, a locally executed AI model is used for this. The software calculates additional image details and increases the resolution of the material. The advantage over many comparable services is that the processing is done entirely on the user’s own computer. Supported systems include those with hardware from AMD, Intel, and Qualcomm. On Copilot+ PCs, the NPU handles the AI calculations.

Easy Operation with Limits
After importing a video, the new “Upscale” option appears in Clipchamp. Users can then select a higher target resolution. Depending on the original material, resolutions up to 4K are available.

However, the technology reaches its natural limits. The AI cannot retrieve missing image information but can only supplement and estimate it. Therefore, very low-resolution videos do not automatically become crystal-clear 4K recordings.
Only for Windows Users
The new feature is available exclusively in the desktop version of Clipchamp for Windows. The browser version does not currently support the feature. Microsoft recommends at least 8 gigabytes of RAM. For smooth usage, 16 gigabytes of memory or more is advisable.
