Windows PCs are currently restarting multiple times for many users. This is causing concern because the restart is triggered again right after booting up. However, this is not due to an error or malware. Microsoft has explained the background and reassures users.
What’s Behind the Multiple Restarts
Currently, users of Windows 11 report that their computers restart immediately after a reboot. This behavior seems unusual and raises doubts about whether the system is affected. Microsoft confirms the process as a planned measure. There is no indication of malware or a security issue. Instead, it is a technical step in the background necessary for system security.

The trigger for the restarts is a certificate exchange. According to a support document, Microsoft is currently distributing new digital signatures for the Secure Boot security feature. The previous certificates date back to 2011 and will expire in June 2026. To ensure devices can continue to start securely after that, an exchange is necessary. This process is currently running simultaneously on many Windows computers.
Restart Occurs Only Once Extra
The additional restart occurs exactly once. Once the new certificates are active in the system, the computer behaves normally again. After that, devices can be started or shut down as usual. The rollout is happening simultaneously for both private and business computers. Users don’t need to take any further action, even if the double restart initially seems confusing.
