Microsoft is unexpectedly discontinuing the popular email client Outlook Lite for Android. Millions of users will soon need to look for alternatives–as the app will be completely phased out by the end of May.
Outlook Lite was launched in July 2022, primarily targeting users of budget smartphones with limited storage and weak processing power. The app offered basic functions such as sending and receiving emails but required significantly fewer resources than the full version.
Microsoft promised fast loading times, low battery consumption, and optimized performance for weaker Android devices. With over ten million downloads, Outlook Lite achieved considerable reach. However, since October 6, the app is no longer available in the Play Store. Users who had already installed the app could continue to use it for the time being.
Soon No Longer Usable
According to a report by the platform “Neowin.net,” Microsoft published the announcement with the identifier MC1276508 in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. It states that Outlook Lite will be completely discontinued as of May 25, 2026. From that date, the app will no longer be usable.

Despite the success of the Lite version, Microsoft has not disclosed reasons for its discontinuation. Users will have to switch to Outlook Mobile, which requires more storage space and puts more strain on the battery and processor. In return, the regular version offers additional features such as calendar management. Why Microsoft decided to discontinue the popular app after just three years remains unclear.
