With the April update, Windows introduced a new power mode designed to unlock even more performance. TECHBOOK shows you how to try out the “Ultimate Performance” mode.

Back in February 2018, Microsoft announced that the “Windows 10 Pro for Workstations” version would be equipped with this new power mode. The workstation version of Windows is specifically designed for high-performance PCs with multiple processors and large amounts of RAM. Part of the new Windows version is the “Ultimate Performance” mode, which aims to reduce micro-latencies, allowing the operating system to adapt extremely quickly to user behavior, hardware, and applications.

Since version 1803, the mode has also been available for PCs without Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. Microsoft has also integrated it into Windows 11. However, by default, it cannot be found in the system settings of consumer versions like Windows 11—unless you follow this trick.

How to Unlock Ultimate Performance on Your Computer

1. Open the command prompt by typing cmd in the search bar on the taskbar and clicking on the result.

2. Copy the following command into the command line:

powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61

3. Press the Enter key.

4. Now open the power options by entering the following command into the command line:

powercfg.cpl

5. Ultimate Performance is now available as an option.

What Is the Difference from the High Performance Mode?

Until now, the “High Performance” mode was the only option to unlock the full power of the computer. With “Ultimate Performance,” there is now another performance mode available that tweaks the power settings in small details.

We compared both using the UserBenchmark tool and found virtually no differences. This may be because the “Ultimate Performance” mode is designed for much stronger hardware than our work laptop can offer. If you have a high-performance PC at home, you might see positive changes, especially in memory access rates.

How to Delete the Power Mode Again

First, switch to another power mode. Then, under the “Ultimate Performance” mode, you can change the power plan settings. Click on Delete power plan and confirm with Yes.
