Apple is equipping its desktop computers with new chips focused on artificial intelligence. Starting September 22, more powerful models like the Mac mini and Mac Studio will hit the market, though they come with a heftier price tag.
Mac mini gets a significant performance boost
Apple has revamped the Mac mini, now featuring M6 and M5 Pro chips. Externally, the compact desktop remains largely unchanged, but internally, it promises significantly more power. According to the manufacturer, the entry-level model with M6 handles tasks related to artificial intelligence up to four times faster than the previous generation.
Apple is also enhancing the processor, graphics, and memory bandwidth. The Mac mini now supports up to 32 GB of unified memory. For those with higher demands, the M5 Pro model is available, offering up to 18 CPU and 20 GPU cores, as well as a maximum of 64 GB of memory. This variant is designed for video editors and users of local AI applications. New features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and faster Ethernet connections. Depending on the configuration, Thunderbolt 4 or Thunderbolt 5 is available.

Mac Studio aims to handle even large AI models
Apple promises even more power with the new Mac Studio. The M5 Max variant already offers 18 CPU cores, up to 40 GPU cores, and up to 256 GB of unified memory. This computer is primarily aimed at creative professionals and users who regularly work with particularly compute-intensive software.
At the top is the M5 Ultra model, which can feature up to 36 CPU cores, 80 GPU cores, and starting in October, up to 512 GB of memory. According to Apple, this allows even large AI models to be run directly on the device. The Mac Studio also includes Thunderbolt 5, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. Additionally, it supports multiple external monitors and can be combined with other systems to provide even more computing power.
Prices rise to well over 6,000 euros
With the new hardware, prices are also rising. The Mac mini with M6 starts at 1,049 euros, while the version with M5 Pro costs at least 1,999 euros. The entry-level price for the Mac Studio is significantly higher: the M5 Max model starts at 2,999 euros.
Those who want the maximum configuration with M5 Ultra will need to invest at least 6,599 euros. Depending on the chosen memory and configuration options, the final price can be significantly higher. Apple is already accepting pre-orders. The first devices are expected to be delivered to buyers starting September 22 and will then be available in stores.
