WhatsApp offers various formatting options to highlight individual words or entire text passages. TECHBOOK reveals how you can write in bold, italics, or strikethrough on WhatsApp.

Sometimes you just want to emphasize a statement in your messages. WhatsApp provides several options for this, aside from emojis, which are not known to everyone. You can easily write in different styles on the messenger. Certain passages or words can stand out in WhatsApp by writing them in bold, italics or strikethrough. With these formats, important information is guaranteed not to be lost. What works on the computer also works on the messenger.

Since there is no extra button for this feature on WhatsApp, punctuation marks are used. Our short guide shows how texts on WhatsApp (for iOS and Android) can be easily formatted.  This will surely impress your chat partners.

Writing in bold on WhatsApp

If you want to write a word or a text section in bold on WhatsApp, place an asterisk at the beginning and end. The formatting is not visible in your own text field. Only when you send the text will the selected area appear bold to the chat partner. We think: Really bold!

Writing in italics

On WhatsApp, you can not only write in bold but also in italics. For the italic font, place an underscore before and after the relevant text. The “underscore” command formats the text in italics.

Writing in strikethrough

Writing in bold and italics on WhatsApp is especially helpful when you want to emphasize something. Writing words or text passages in strikethrough is particularly useful if you discover an error in a message that has already been sent. You can easily correct it with the strikethrough function. The word or sentence is written between tildes (also known as the approximately sign or tilde).

Important to note: No space is set before or after the respective special character! This applies whether you are writing in strikethrough, italics, or bold on WhatsApp.

What is “monospace” formatting?

To format a word or text passage in monospace, simply write three backticks before and after the word or text passage.

Alternative to punctuation marks – the context menu

If you can’t find or use the punctuation marks on the keyboard, you can still write in bold, italics, strikethrough, or monospace on WhatsApp. Use the context menu on both Android and iPhone for this.

  • Android: Tap and hold the entered text you want to format. Now select “Bold, Italics or More.” Tap “More” to choose “Strikethrough” or “Monospace.”
  • iPhone: Tap the text you have entered in the text field and select “Select” or “Select All” > B_I_U. Then choose “Bold,” “Italics,” “Strikethrough,” or “Monospace.”
