WhatsApp is a daily tool for many iPhone users. Messages, group chats, and voice messages are often handled through the messenger. To ensure new features work reliably and current security standards are met, Meta regularly adjusts the app’s technical requirements.
Starting November 30, 2026, the next change will take effect. WhatsApp will then require at least iOS 15.5. If an iPhone does not meet this requirement, the messenger can no longer be used on the device. However, for owners of older iPhones, this will have little impact for now.
Which iPhones Are Affected
The new requirement is outlined in WhatsApp’s official support section. It states that from November 30, 2026, the messenger will require at least iOS 15.5.
Many older iPhones are already excluded from using WhatsApp. As of July 2025, WhatsApp raised the requirements to iOS 15.1. Since then, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus are no longer supported. These models have not received updates since iOS 12.
Since all iPhones that supported iOS 15.1 can also update to iOS 15.5, no device will be removed from the list of compatible iPhones due to the adjustment of the minimum requirement.

Why Even Compatible iPhones Could Be Affected
However, the prerequisite for continued use is the installation of the latest available iOS version. Even on a fundamentally compatible iPhone, WhatsApp may no longer function if an older iOS version than iOS 15.5 is installed.

Those who have not yet installed available software updates should check the operating system version in time. Otherwise, the use of WhatsApp may also be restricted from November 2026.
How to Check the iOS Version
To determine if a newer iOS version is available, go to the iPhone’s settings. First, open the “General” section. Then tap on “Software Update.”
The iPhone will then indicate if a more current iOS version is available. If an update is offered, the installation can be started directly. After that, simply follow the further instructions on the display.
