To connect with others on WhatsApp, users currently have to share their phone numbers. This is set to change. Meta is introducing usernames for the messenger. This allows users to choose a name to connect with others for the first time, keeping their phone numbers hidden. However, a phone number is still required for WhatsApp registration.
Usernames to Protect Phone Numbers
With this update, Meta aims to enhance privacy protection. In the future, an individual username will suffice for others to make contact. The phone number will not be displayed and is no longer needed for initial contact.
To message someone, you must know their exact username. According to WhatsApp, there will be no public directory or automatic username suggestions. Additionally, a so-called username key can be set up. Without this key, initial contact is not possible. This is intended to create an additional barrier against unwanted messages.

Almost Free Choice of WhatsApp Username
There are few restrictions for most users when choosing a username. However, an exception applies: names of prominent individuals are blocked to prevent misuse. If you share a name with a well-known personality and wish to use it as a username, you cannot do so.

Companies, creators, and organizations can adopt their names from Instagram or Facebook. The prerequisite is that the WhatsApp account is linked to the Meta account.
Introduction Will Be Gradual
Meta plans to roll out usernames throughout this year. The release will occur independently of the region, but in several waves. As a result, the new feature may be available in some regions earlier than others. Starting at the end of June 2026, it will be possible to reserve usernames, which will then become active later.
