Stickers have been among the most popular features on WhatsApp for years. Users can already create their own designs from photos and videos. Now, an analysis of a current test version suggests that the messenger could significantly expand this feature.

WhatsApp Tests Stickers with Sound

According to the portal “Android Authority,” WhatsApp is working on so-called sound stickers. These can be created from both images and videos. In the tested preview version, a new audio icon appeared, allowing users to make their own voice recording or select an existing audio file. The audio track would then be directly linked to the sticker and sent together.

Up to Ten Seconds of Personal Recording

According to the report, users could add audio files up to ten seconds long to image stickers. If a longer file is selected, it will be shortened accordingly. Recipients would then play the sound directly in the chat via a speaker icon.

Animated stickers are also set to benefit from the innovation. If a user creates a sticker from a video, WhatsApp could automatically adopt up to five seconds of the included sound. Alternatively, it would be possible to replace this with another audio file or a new voice recording. This would make stickers significantly more personal and could convey not only visual but also acoustic reactions in the future.

Further Updates in Progress

In addition to the sound stickers, further adjustments were discovered in the test version. WhatsApp is apparently working on an option to toggle the previously automatically generated border of stickers on or off. So far, users have no control over this effect.

Moreover, the messenger is experimenting with a revised text input field for chats. Instead of the current single-line view, a two-line layout is set to be used in the future. While the actual message is written in the upper line, additional functions such as camera, attachments, or other tools could be placed below. Everything is still in development. Whether and when the innovations will actually be released for all users is currently uncertain.
