WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature to improve call quality. An integrated noise cancellation is intended to make conversations on WhatsApp clearer. The messenger automatically reduces background noise so users can focus more on voices.
Previously, WhatsApp introduced new features for calls, including the ability to make calls directly in the browser. These calls are end-to-end encrypted. Only the participants can hear the content of the conversation. This is particularly convenient for Linux users, as there is no dedicated desktop app.
Development in the Current Test System
With the current beta update for Android (version 2.26.11.8), it is evident that WhatsApp is working on better audio quality. According to the online portal “WABetaInfo,” the new feature detects noises like traffic, wind, or background voices and filters them out. The software isolates the voice and reduces other noises in real time. Especially in noisy environments, conversations should appear clearer and less distracting.
Currently, this technology is not available on Android. iPhone and iPad already have similar features, such as voice isolation in the device settings. Android users have so far had to do without integrated noise filters.

Automatic Activation Planned
WhatsApp plans to activate noise cancellation by default. As soon as a call starts, the feature should automatically turn on. A notification will inform users about this. The end-to-end encryption remains unchanged. The audio data is processed directly on the device before being transmitted.
Despite the automatic activation, users retain control. Noise cancellation can be turned off at any time in the call menu. This is useful, for example, if ambient sounds are to be intentionally transmitted or if music is playing during a call.

Start Date Not Yet Known
Noise cancellation is still in development. WhatsApp is currently improving the detection and filtering of background noises. Only after that will the company likely distribute the feature to initial beta testers. A specific date for the launch of the final version is currently unclear.
