About one-third of users on dating apps like Tinder are looking for a committed relationship. One aspect is particularly important to many of them.
Environmental awareness is playing an increasingly crucial role in online dating–and can even determine whether a match happens or not. Especially in Germany, many young users of the dating app Tinder pay attention to shared values regarding climate and sustainability.
Climate Protection as a Criterion for a Match
“We see particularly in countries like Germany that users talk about climate change and sustainability and consider it a deal-breaker if one is not engaged in these areas,” said Melissa Hobley, Tinder’s chief marketing officer, to the German Press Agency in New York.
Topics like climate change and environmental protection are becoming increasingly relevant in the dating behavior of young people. Those who are not convincing on the topic of sustainability have poor chances with many potential partners–especially in the age group between 18 and 25, which is most represented on Tinder.

One-Third Seek a Committed Relationship
According to Tinder, about one-third of users between 18 and 25 are looking for a long-term partnership. Approximately two-thirds say they want to meet someone whose values align with their own. Intercultural relationships are also considered open possibilities for about two-thirds of young users.

The dating app Tinder was released in September 2012 and has fundamentally changed online dating with its swipe principle. Users are shown profiles of other singles in their area. A swipe to the right indicates interest, while a swipe to the left indicates rejection. If there is mutual interest, a so-called match is created. On some days, up to three billion swipes are counted worldwide.
LGBTQ Community on the Dating App Tinder Grows
Tinder is part of the Match Group, based in Dallas, Texas. The company also includes other dating platforms such as OkCupid, Hinge, Pairs, and OurTime. According to the company, the app is available in 190 countries and in more than 40 languages.
The LGBTQ community on the platform is currently growing particularly dynamically. The English abbreviation LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. The number of users identifying as LGBTQ on the dating app has more than doubled in the past two years, Tinder reported.
