There are many social networks today. One of them is Jappy—even though it has largely faded into obscurity. Launched in the early 2000s as one of the pioneering platforms in Germany, Jappy once recorded around 2.5 billion page views per month. Learn more about Jappy’s spectacular beginnings at TECHBOOK—and how the network and its user numbers stand today.

The Origin and Success Story of Jappy

For those unfamiliar, the later Jappy was founded in 2011 under the name singletreffen.net—fittingly focused on flirting. But the portal was meant to do more, as founders Matthias Vogl and Christian Wimmer explain on the Jappy website. Once the desired additional features were added, “a very special name for the site was needed, one that reflected these underlying thoughts,” it continues. Thus, the network was renamed Jappy—initially with the domain ending .tv, and later with .de as the suffix.

The whole thing took off quite rapidly. The founders attribute this to the lack of well-made dating sites at the time. Clearly, Tinder, Bumble, and the like were still in the future. Additionally, Jappy allowed users to play games, form groups, and more. For members, it was free, with the site primarily funded by advertising.

By 2006, more than 100,000 people were using Jappy to flirt, find new friends, and stay in touch with old companions. Just two years later, Jappy had around half a million users and more than 2.5 billion page views per month. “And on October 1, 2009, Jappy had a user base of over 1,500,000,” the website states. But then things slowly went downhill.

The Decline After 2011–and the Reasons Behind It

In the following decade, Jappy declined. The number of members steadily decreased—a trend accelerated by growing competition. Many users criticized that Jappy was stuck in the past, both in design and features, as well as in attracting new faces. No wonder, as younger users were increasingly drawn to more modern, international platforms.

You can’t blame the Jappy operators for not trying. In 2017, they rolled out a major update with a revamped layout, new navigation, and an overall changed structure. But the update was not well-received by users. Many described the new design as “childish” or “kindergarten-like”—confusing, unintuitive, and in some areas more cumbersome than before. Some features suddenly became accessible only through detours. However, loyal users didn’t want to give up Jappy without a fight: Later that year, they launched a petition to bring back the old version. But the total of 540 signatures apparently wasn’t enough to make a difference.

The Current State of Jappy

Jappy still exists, but the platform’s heyday is long over. With around 230,000 active members, a small, loyal core remains—a close-knit community. But that doesn’t mean they don’t criticize their digital gathering place. To this day, intrusive ads are described as annoying. “It used to be a really nice and friendly chat room with a lot of fun,” writes a user on the review portal Trustpilot, but “unfortunately, everything was given up for advertising.”
