Watch movies, use multiple programs simultaneously, or extend your laptop screen without having to wear a large headset. With the Aura, Google and Xreal aim to make this possible.

The Xreal Aura is a computer headset with transparent lenses that allow the surroundings to remain visible despite the overlaid content. Virtual windows can be placed side by side, so an internet page and a text document can remain open simultaneously.

The operating system used is Google’s Android XR. The platform is specifically designed for AR headsets and allows access to apps from the Google Play Store. This means the Aura is intended not only for media consumption but also as a mobile work device.

Displays with up to 120 Hertz

According to Google, Xreal uses two mini-displays from Sony, each with 1920×1200 pixels per eye. The field of view is 70 degrees, and the refresh rate is up to 120 Hertz. For watching movies, the otherwise transparent lenses can be darkened.

The headset itself weighs less than 95 grams, according to Xreal. However, the battery and most of the technology are housed in an additional computer connected by cable, which adds another 265 grams. The system is operated via hand movements, voice commands, and a touch-sensitive surface on the computer. A mouse and keyboard can be connected wirelessly.

Gemini to Assist with Operation

Google’s AI assistant Gemini is also integrated directly into the headset. Gemini is designed to answer questions about open documents and the visible environment and can mark relevant areas in the field of view. Additionally, a laptop can be connected via USB-C. Its screen then appears as an additional virtual window, which Gemini is also supposed to explain.

The Aura will initially launch in the U.S., Canada, and South Korea. In Japan, orders will be possible starting November 2, according to Google, with delivery scheduled for mid-November. The version with 256 gigabytes of storage costs $1,099 at launch instead of the regular $1,279. For 512 gigabytes, the initial price is $1,299 instead of $1,499. When the Xreal Aura will come to Germany is still unknown.
