Anyone who has ever been frustrated while debating with AI knows the feeling. The answer doesn’t fit, the solution doesn’t work, and the tone gets harsher. With the AI chatbot Claude, however, this could have consequences in special cases. Developer Anthropic has adjusted its terms of use, allowing the system to independently end conversations under certain circumstances.
The background is a new rule against repeated abusive behavior toward its own AI models. The online magazine Android Authority reports on this, citing the company’s updated guidelines.
The Rule Should Only Apply in Exceptional Cases
Anthropic emphasizes that this is not about normal criticism or annoyed reactions to errors. Users are still allowed to question, correct, or strongly criticize responses. According to the company, the new directive is solely aimed at cases where people repeatedly insult or abuse the AI without a factual basis.
The new guidelines state that persistent and unnecessary cruel behavior toward the models is now prohibited. According to Anthropic, the rule should only be applied in extreme situations.
What Happens in Case of a Violation?
Currently, there is no automatic account ban. Instead, Claude can end the conversation. A developer clarified in a discussion on X that the measure is currently limited to the chat itself.
A ban cannot be completely ruled out, however. If a user repeatedly violates the rules, further consequences could follow. According to current knowledge, a human would have to decide on this.

Why Does AI Need Protection at All?
The announcement quickly sparked a fundamental discussion. After all, Claude has neither feelings nor consciousness. Many users are wondering why a machine needs protection from insults at all.

Some voices argue that respectful interactions could lead to better training and usage results in the long run. Others see the measure more as a signal to user culture than as protection for the AI itself.
The Real Reason Could Be Technical
An equally plausible explanation is technical. Every input causes computational effort and thus costs. This applies regardless of whether the message contains a meaningful request or merely an insult.
The AI must analyze, interpret, and process every input. From the operator’s perspective, resources are consumed without any productive benefit. The new rule could therefore primarily serve to avoid unnecessary strain on the infrastructure.
Anthropic’s updated terms of use are set to take effect on November 12, 2026.
