Reports have been circulating for some time that Apple might not bundle the launch of its iPhone lineup in 2026 as usual. There has been speculation that there could be a significantly larger time gap between individual models. Some even mentioned up to six months. Initially, there were no concrete indications, but now a new report is revisiting these rumors.
Regular Models Still in the Fall
According to the online magazine “MacRumors,” which cites Tim Long, Apple will stick to the usual schedule for the classic models. Devices like the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be released in September 2026. It’s a different story for the first foldable iPhone, known as the iPhone Fold. This model is slated for delivery in December 2026.
This would deviate from the usual process where new iPhones are unveiled in September and sold shortly thereafter. A similar approach was taken in 2017 when the iPhone X followed in November. The report does not specifically explain why Apple might take this route. However, it notes that a foldable iPhone is technically much more complex than conventional devices.
The flexible display and hinge, in particular, pose high demands. Apple is said to place great importance on stability and durability to avoid known weaknesses of such devices. A later launch could provide more time for optimizing technology and production.

Limited Production and High Price
Additionally, the foldable iPhone is expected to be among the most expensive models and initially available only in limited quantities. A staggered release could make it easier for Apple to gradually increase production. At the same time, the company could maintain attention over a longer period. Instead of a single major market launch, two significant sales phases would be possible.
Another factor could be collaboration with developers. They need time to adapt their applications to new devices. Especially for an unusual product like a foldable, additional months could help optimize apps. Since Apple often introduces new features late, an additional period of two to three months could reduce potential issues at launch.

Impact on Purchase Decisions
For users, a staggered schedule would have practical implications. Those looking to buy a new iPhone in the fall would have to consider whether waiting for later models is worthwhile. A second market launch at the end of the year could delay decisions. At the same time, the iPhone year would become less predictable overall.
