Smartphones are true multitaskers in everyday life, offering constant communication, information, and entertainment on the go. And because they are so small and handy, it’s especially easy to stare at the screen while engaging in another activity–such as walking the dog. But according to a new study, this has some stinky consequences.
More Dog Poop Due to Smartphones
A research team documented relevant findings in its study “Love Dogs, Love Nature: Rethinking Environmental Responsibility Through Everyday Dog-Walking Practices.”
For this, the experts observed passersby for about 40 hours at various locations in the English county of Surrey, including Norbury Park and the Denbies Wine Estate. They recorded eleven incidents where individuals clearly overlooked their dog’s poop or didn’t even notice their dog was doing its business due to smartphone or headphone distractions.
Not Just Mess–Dogs Enter Restricted Areas
This might be the least of the problems that can arise. Furthermore, the research team observed that dogs of distracted owners also more frequently strayed from their paths and entered wildlife protection areas. This led to disturbances of nesting birds and uncontrolled approaches to livestock.
On the bright side, the majority of dog owners consistently picked up their pets’ waste. Some even bagged other dogs’ poop. Experts and owners would find it easier to clean up the mess if disposal stations were more generously distributed, not just at entrances but also in the middle of parks. There should also be better signage for nesting areas and leash requirements.

Nonetheless, the finding remains that distracting factors such as smartphones can lead to more dog poop being left behind and other irresponsible behaviors.
