Modern cell phones are now portable multipurpose tools that can handle many practical tasks in everyday life. And according to a new study, there’s an unprecedented way to get even more out of these devices.

Cell Towers Central to Boosting Smartphone Performance

A research team from the University of California, San Diego reached this conclusion in their new study. The scientists primarily examined the CO2 footprint of constant mobile connectivity. In their solutions, they also discovered a way to enhance smartphone performance.

The focus of the research is on 5G cell towers, which facilitate mobile data transmission. These towers are generally quite large to cover a wide area. However, they emit signals in all directions, which can be disrupted by obstacles, scattering, or deflection. The signal can also weaken over long distances.

This can lead to signal loss. To compensate, both the cell tower and smartphone operate at full capacity, which notably affects battery life.

More Small Cell Towers Are Better

The researchers propose more towers, but smaller ones, as the solution. While these may have less capacity individually, they allow for better and more strategic distribution, keeping the required number relatively low. This would contribute to a threefold energy savings in the network.

At the same time, the signal for consumers would significantly improve, and battery consumption would reduce by 50 percent. Distance also plays a role: A 5G-enabled phone will drain its 5800-mAh battery in about six hours at a distance of 500 meters. At just 100 meters from the tower, it lasts nine hours.

Boosting Smartphone Performance Benefits the Environment

The practical implementation is also simpler. Large new cell towers wouldn’t be necessary; instead, the technology could be installed at just 15 meters high. Instead of building tall towers, trees or streetlights could be used.

Finally, this alternative approach to enhancing smartphone performance is also environmentally friendly. According to the study, the CO2 footprint of the telecommunications sector is now comparable to that of global air travel. However, the new method extends the lifespan of phone batteries, making replacements less frequent.

This solution is particularly suitable for densely populated urban areas. In fact, there are already initial projects moving in this direction–including in Germany. For example, Vodafone has converted 50 advertising columns in Düsseldorf into 5G stations for a fast network.
