Install iOS 18.6.2 quickly
Apple states in the relevant notes that the iPhone maker has released iOS 18.6.2, iPadOS 18.6.2, and MacOS 15.6.1. While this is a relatively small update, it is all the more important because it is solely for security purposes.
Apple writes: “This update includes important security fixes and is recommended for all users.” So, you won’t get new features with iOS 18.6.2, but you will have current and optimal protection against various security threats.
Update aims to prevent “extremely sophisticated attack”
The main reason for the quickly released update is said to be a problem in the ImageIO framework. This allows apps to read and write image files and is known for its high efficiency, color management, and access to image metadata. ImageIO has been available since the iPhone XS, so it is present in all common Apple smartphones.
This is where a critical security vulnerability lies, which iOS 18.6.2 addresses. Currently, there is a risk that processing a malicious image file could lead to memory corruption. Apple reports being aware of a report suggesting this flaw may have been exploited in an “extremely sophisticated attack” against specific targets.
The descriptions suggest that criminal actors have not exploited the security issue on a large scale. However, as a rule, when new security updates of any kind are available, consumers should not hesitate to download and install them. This also applies to iOS 18.6.2.
