In June 2024, Apple introduced a completely new Siri that can understand users’ personal context and perform actions independently. So far, the company has only announced a collaboration with Google to develop an AI model suitable for Siri, but nothing more. The update is finally expected to arrive in September this year. However, Apple has already hinted at the capabilities the new voice assistant will actually have.
Intelligent Voice Control
For the Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Apple announced new features for greater accessibility on iPhone and other devices. The focus was on enhanced voice control, which, thanks to Apple Intelligence, allows the iPhone to be fully controlled by voice.
Until now, users had to specify exact names or numbers of buttons for voice control. As Apple demonstrated in a video, this will no longer be necessary. The voice control can understand natural language phrases–such as “tap the blue folder” or “enlarge the paragraph.”
This requires the assistive technology to understand the content on the screen and perform actions independently. According to “MacRumors,” this is a clear indication of the new AI-powered Siri version.

A Small Step Toward Agentive AI
At the WWDC 2024 developer conference, Apple showcased exactly these capabilities. Several examples demonstrated how the assistant recognizes screen content and can perform more complex tasks based on it.
Siri is expected to understand personal information across apps–such as messages, mail, calendar, and files–and simultaneously recognize what is currently displayed on the screen to execute appropriate actions. Interaction with users is to occur in natural language and allow for follow-up questions.

The new voice control essentially offers what Apple announced for Siri two years ago. The only difference is that users still control the iPhone themselves with the assistive technology. Here, Siri as an agentive AI comes into play, capable of executing actions independently. The groundwork–recognizing and interacting with screen content–has already been laid.
New AI Siri Arrives with iOS 27
The revamped Siri is set to become a central element of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. Apple is expected to introduce the new operating systems on June 8 and release the first beta versions shortly thereafter. The launch for all users is anticipated in September.
The new Siri will have the same system requirements as Apple Intelligence. Supported devices include iPhone 15 Pro and newer, Macs with M1 chip and newer, and iPads with A17 Pro or M1 chip and newer.
