Google is planning a new feature for the phone app on Android devices to make calls more efficient. With “Expressive Calling,” users will soon be able to select the reason for a call and communicate it to the recipient in advance. This innovation aims to clarify the urgency or topic of a call before it is answered.
Set Call Reason in Advance
The feature, which 9To5Google found in the current phone app’s code, allows users to choose from four categories: “Catch Up,” “Share News,” “Quick Question,” or “Urgent Call.” The selected information appears on the recipient’s call screen and in notifications.
Particularly interesting is the “Urgent Call” category, which can bypass the smartphone’s do-not-disturb mode. This ensures important calls reach the recipient even when the device is silenced. Missed calls of this type are clearly marked as urgent contact attempts.

Potential Misuse of the Feature
Despite its practical applications, the system carries risks. For instance, callers might regularly use the urgency option to gain attention more quickly. Service providers or salespeople could also misuse the feature to bypass the do-not-disturb mode.

How Google plans to prevent misuse of this feature is currently unknown. Excessive use could undermine the significance of the urgency level and jeopardize the feature’s acceptance.
Future Availability
The exact release date of Expressive Calling is still unclear. It is speculated that the feature might first be available on Google’s Pixel devices before rolling out to other Android smartphones. An official confirmation from Google is still pending.
