Only with iOS 26.1 did Apple introduce so-called “Background Security Improvements.” It also tested the implementation in the beta version of iOS 26.3. Now, users are receiving such a security improvement for the first time as an official update in the form of iOS 26.3.1 (a).

Security Flaw in WebKit Closed

Apple’s Background Security Improvements (BSI) are smaller patches that automatically install in the background. They replace the previous “Rapid Security Responses” and are designed to close security gaps more quickly without having to wait for a system update.

The current BSIs with the (a) suffix are available for iOS 26.3.1, iPadOS 26.3.1, as well as macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 and macOS Tahoe 26.3.2 (exclusively for MacBook Neo). They close a security flaw in WebKit. According to Apple’s support page, attackers could bypass the so-called Same-Origin Policy through manipulated web content. This security feature normally ensures that content from different sources remains separate. Apple claims to have resolved the issue through improved input validation.

Features of the BSI Updates

Unlike larger system updates, BSI updates can automatically install if users enable this option. It can be found in the settings under “Privacy and Security” in the section “Background Security Improvements.” There, installation can also be started manually.

If automatic installation is enabled, the iPhone installs available updates independently. Otherwise, users will receive the corresponding security fixes at a later time with regular software updates.

Option for Uninstallation

The advantage of BSI over regular system updates is that they can be uninstalled by users. Apple states in a support article: “If compatibility issues occur in rare cases, the ‘Background Security Improvements’ feature can be temporarily removed and then improved in a subsequent software update.”

In the past, there were occasional problems with the predecessor “Rapid Security Responses” that disappeared after removing the patches.
