Sega has long since exited the video console business. However, as a publisher, the company continues to regularly release new games for Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. A series of classic ports also appeared for iOS and Android as part of the “Sega Forever” program. However, the program has been discontinued, and now most of the remaining games are disappearing from the app stores.
“Sega Forever” Games No Longer Supported
Sega Forever was originally intended to ensure that older games were re-released for modern platforms. At its peak, the program included more than 30 titles. While the ports were not always true to the originals, they at least supported controllers as input devices. Sega had already discontinued the service, which started in 2017, by the end of 2023. At that time, the first games disappeared from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, including titles like “Revenge of Shinobi,” “Gunstar Heroes,” and “Space Harrier 2.”

Now, the last remnants of the retro ports are following suit. Anyone who currently opens one of the Sega Forever games receives an “End of Service” message:

Sega points out that while support is being discontinued, offline play is still possible. Additionally, the publisher is now offering all remaining titles for free. Previously, they were only available for purchase or required an in-app purchase for ad-free use, as reported by “Android Authority.”
Download Games Now Before Sega Removes Them
The games are still available for download at the moment. However, like the other Sega Forever titles before them, the publisher is likely to remove them from the App Store and Play Store soon. The following retro classics are affected:
- Crazy Taxi Classic – iOS and Android
- Golden Axe Classics – iOS and Android
- Shining Force Classics – iOS and Android
- Sonic CD Classic – iOS and Android
- Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Ep. II – iOS and Android
- Streets of Rage Classic – iOS and Android
- Streets of Rage 2 Classic – iOS and Android
- Super Monkey Ball: Sakura Ed. – iOS and Android
- Virtua Tennis Challenge – iOS and Android
Anyone who downloads the nine titles now can continue to use them even after they are removed from the app stores. Once a game is in your app library, it can be uninstalled and reinstalled at any time.
