For years, it has been known that Apple is working on a novel AirPods model with built-in cameras. However, these are not intended for taking pictures but to provide visual information to feed Apple Intelligence. Currently, the development seems to be on hold–though there is likely a good reason for this.
Status of AirPods Pro with Cameras Unclear
The well-known prototype collector and occasional leaker Kosutami writes on X (formerly Twitter) that the development of the camera-equipped AirPods Pro is allegedly “halted.” This apparently corrected an earlier statement that the work on the product was already “completed.”
Kosutami did not provide further details. The statement is surprising because Bloomberg reported as recently as May that the AirPods Pro with cameras were in a late testing phase.

Cameras for Siri and Apple Intelligence
The cameras are intended to capture visual information from the wearer’s surroundings and pass it on to Siri and Visual Intelligence. They are not meant for recording but for functions related to artificial intelligence.
In February, Kosutami explained that infrared cameras are supposed to make the AirPods Pro ready for Apple Intelligence. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg and the well-known industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had already revealed Apple’s plans for the camera-equipped AirPods in 2024.
Earlier reports suggested that sales were supposed to start in the first half of 2026. However, in May 2026, TECHBOOK reported that the launch date remained unclear. The reason is delays in the development of AI-supported Siri, which is expected to come in fall 2026 and initially only in beta testing.
It is therefore assumed that the pause in the development of AirPods Pro with cameras is related to the delay of the necessary AI features. Only when these are ready will the foundation for the new product truly be in place.

Clue Found in iOS 27
Hints in the developer beta code of iOS 27 suggest that work on the new AirPods is already well advanced. Developer Sam Henri Gold found the following phrase: “two images of cameras on both sides of the user’s head.” The description comes from the context rules for a product with the codename B790, which Gold posted on X.
Gold initially suspected Apple’s planned Smart Glasses. However, it is more likely that it refers to the AirPods with cameras. AirPods Pro 3 carried the codename B788, while the Smart Glasses are supposed to be called N50.
