Apple is working on a new generation of its AirPods, which are expected to be equipped with cameras and support various AI functions. The development is reportedly well advanced, but there are still uncertainties regarding the planned market launch. The integration of artificial intelligence and an improved version of Siri play a central role in this.
Cameras Provide Information for Siri
According to a report from “Bloomberg,” Apple is already in a late testing phase with the new AirPods. The focus is not on the traditional use of cameras for photos or videos. Instead, they are intended to capture environmental information that can be directly used by the voice assistant Siri.
This could enable Siri to recognize objects and answer questions in the respective context. The goal is to provide more targeted support to users in everyday life. The artificial intelligence would thus be more integrated into the use of the earbuds, significantly expanding their functionality.

Hardware Well Developed, Software Slows
Reports about the launch of AI-supported AirPods with cameras have been around since 2024. Last year, the plans became somewhat more concrete. Internally, the hardware of the new AirPods is already considered well advanced. Prototypes are said to have reached a nearly final design. However, a specific date for the market launch is apparently still not foreseeable. It is speculated, though, that it could still happen in 2026.
The reason, according to the report, lies mainly in the software. Apple continues to work on a new version of Siri, which particularly needs improvement in visual AI functions. Only when these requirements are met is a market launch of the camera-equipped AirPods likely to become realistic.
