Spotify recently launched its new youth profiles, which have led to unexpected issues for many families. Parents are now experiencing restrictions that complicate matters.
As reported by “Caschys Blog,” complaints from parents have been increasing in recent days. Their children can hardly access audiobooks through the new youth profiles. Series like The Three ???, Bibi & Tina, or other well-known formats either no longer appear in the profiles or cannot be played. Often, only music remains, while audiobook content is effectively hidden.
What Spotify Aims to Achieve with Youth Profiles
With the youth profiles, Spotify intended to give parents more control. Within a family subscription, managed accounts can be created where adults can decide whether videos, video podcasts, or certain content are accessible. The profiles operate without their own login data and are fully linked to the main account. While audiobooks continue to work seamlessly through regular profiles, they are apparently heavily restricted or completely absent in the youth accounts. A clear explanation from Spotify is still missing.

No Reversal After the Switch
Additionally, a fixed rule in the new system is noteworthy: Once an existing account is converted into a youth profile, this step cannot be reversed after seven days. Spotify explicitly intends for this. The profiles remain youth profiles permanently and cannot be reverted to regular user accounts.
Therefore, anyone testing the switch and then realizing that important content is missing must act quickly.
Previous Solution
Before the introduction of the youth profiles, many parents used regular family accounts for their children and restricted content through device settings or filters. While not perfect, this at least allowed for audiobooks. With the new profiles, Spotify takes more control itself—but currently offers no convincing solution for families who value audiobook content.

Whether this is a bug or a deliberate restriction is unclear. What is certain is that while the youth profiles solve one problem, they simultaneously create a new one that directly affects many families in their daily lives.
