Previously, you had to choose: Either put on headphones and enjoy the audiobook or open the e-book. Audible now offers a new solution that brings both formats together. With the new “Read and Listen” feature, users can follow texts in sync with audio playback. This means you can read along with the e-book text word for word while listening to an audiobook.

Read Along Like Karaoke

The “Read & Listen” feature ensures that the audiobook and e-book versions of a title are synchronized. The requirement is that you own both versions—meaning the audiobook on Audible and the corresponding e-book on Kindle. Once the app detects a match, the formats can be combined.

When playing the audiobook, the text in the e-book is highlighted in real-time, similar to a karaoke display. You can switch flexibly between the “Listen” and “Read & Listen” modes at any time. The technology builds on the well-known Whispersync page synchronization but goes a step further to enable an immersive reading experience.

Easier Learning and Understanding

Audible cites several advantages of the new feature. Especially in language learning, simultaneous listening and reading can help improve pronunciation and text comprehension. Even complex content can be more easily grasped through combined reading and listening. This deepens understanding and makes learning more enjoyable.

Availability Initially in the U.S.

According to Audible, hundreds of thousands of titles are available at launch, including German-language works. However, the feature is currently only usable in the U.S. It is expected to roll out in Germany in the coming months.

Important: The feature only works for titles where you own both the Audible audiobook and the Kindle e-book. A special filter in the app shows compatible titles. With immersive reading, Audible integrates its platform more closely with the Kindle ecosystem, making the classic either-or between listening and reading obsolete.
