Users of OneDrive on older iPhones or iPads should prepare for limitations. Microsoft plans to end support for certain Apple devices and will require significantly newer operating systems in the future.

Microsoft is raising the requirements for its OneDrive app on Apple’s mobile devices. This is evident from the application’s version notes in the App Store. Future versions of the cloud app will require at least iOS 26 or iPadOS 26.

The company has not yet specified an exact date for the transition. However, it is already clear that users of older Apple devices will no longer receive OneDrive updates once the change is implemented. The app is used for tasks such as storing files online, automatically backing up photos, and syncing documents between smartphones, tablets, and computers.

These iPhones and iPads are affected

The change affects several devices that no longer support Apple’s current operating system generation. This includes the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. Since these models cannot be updated to iOS 26, they will not meet OneDrive’s future requirements.

The seventh-generation iPad also falls out of the support period. Apple does not provide an update to iPadOS 26 for this tablet either. While users of these devices can continue to use the app for now, they will have to forgo new features and bug fixes from future updates. Microsoft has not yet disclosed how long older OneDrive versions will continue to function fully.

How to keep OneDrive up to date

Owners of a compatible iPhone can usually meet the new requirements by updating their operating system. Supported models include the iPhone 11 series and newer models. The iPhone SE of the second and third generation also continues to receive current iOS versions.

To check if an update is available, go to the iPhone settings. Under “General” and then “Software Update,” the system will indicate if a newer version is available. If an update is offered, it can be installed directly, ensuring continued access to upcoming OneDrive versions.
