Google is expanding Maps with numerous AI features. The new version aims to do much more than navigation and is increasingly becoming a personal assistant for everyday life.
Google Maps Handles Complex Tasks for the First Time
With the new “Ask Maps” feature, Google Maps gains comprehensive AI capabilities. Instead of just answering questions or calculating routes, the app can now handle multi-step tasks. Users can, for example, request to order a specific dish along their route. The AI searches for suitable restaurants, considers personal preferences or dietary needs, and places the desired order directly in the cart. The user must then complete the purchase themselves.
Additionally, Ask Maps assists in finding hotels, restaurants, or events. The AI evaluates criteria such as price, reviews, or location and suggests suitable accommodations as well as concerts, comedy shows, or other events in the area. This feature is intended to simplify travel and leisure planning.

Personalization with Gmail–Voluntary and Optional
Google is also expanding Maps with a new personalization feature. Those who agree can link their Gmail account with Ask Maps. This allows the app to recognize hotel or flight bookings and provide tailored recommendations. For instance, Maps can suggest attractions near the hotel or calculate when users should leave for the airport.
According to Google, the connection with Gmail is disabled by default and must be explicitly enabled. Additionally, Ask Maps can remember previous conversations. This allows users to continue previously started travel plans later without re-entering all the information.

Real-Time Information for Everyday Life
Google Maps is also set to become more helpful in public transportation. A new live display provides information on current departure times and delays for buses, trains, subways, or ferries. The data is continuously updated to facilitate travel planning.
Google is also simplifying the reporting of changes to locations. Users can, for example, upload a photo of a business so that Maps recognizes new opening hours and adopts them after confirmation. Additional notes–such as parking options–can also be shared directly through the app.
The new features are being introduced gradually. The AI-powered food ordering will initially launch exclusively in the U.S., with other countries to follow later.
