For years, rumors have circulated that Apple is working on an AirPods model with integrated cameras. Insiders agree that the launch is planned for 2026–the only uncertainty is in what form. The actual purpose of the cameras is also still open.

Cameras in AirPods for Environmental Recognition

As early as 2024, well-known industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicted an AirPods model with integrated cameras for 2026. These are expected to be infrared sensors like those in the Face ID module of the iPhone. They should be able to recognize the environment, enabling control through hand gestures in the air.

The leaker and prototype collector Kosutami confirmed this prediction in a post on X (formerly Twitter). According to him, the AirPods Pro with cameras will be able to “see around you.” This spatial understanding could not only assist in operation but also enhance the 3D audio experience through more precise localization. Although no further technical details are mentioned in the post, he does reveal an important detail: The price is expected to remain the same.

Successor or “Pro Max” Model?

According to Kosutami’s information, this could be a successor to the AirPods Pro 3, which remain priced at 249 euros. However, insiders are not in agreement on this point. The Chinese leaker Instant Digital, for example, disagrees that it is a new generation, as reported by “MacRumors.”

Instead, he believes that Apple will add a higher-priced variant to the AirPods Pro 3. Thus, the company could offer two versions of the AirPods Pro 3 in 2026. Apple already follows a similar strategy with the AirPods 4, which are available in two price tiers: 149 euros and 199 euros (with ANC).

There is no further information on how Apple might differentiate the two versions of the AirPods Pro 3 externally. However, a “Max” addition like with the iPhone is conceivable. This wouldn’t be entirely new, as Apple’s over-ear headphones are already called AirPods Max.

Possible Launch in Fall

Nothing has changed in Kuo’s prediction for the launch this year. For a new AirPods Pro generation, that would be quite early, as the current generation was only released in 2025. So far, there have been three years between predecessors.

Typically, Apple introduces new AirPods models alongside iPhones in the fall. All previous AirPods Pro models–1st generation, 2nd generation (Lightning and USB-C), 3rd generation, as well as AirPods 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods Max (USB-C)–have been released either in September or October.
