OLED TVs are considered by many to be among the most attractive on the market. However, as screen sizes increase, so do the costs significantly. Models starting at 77 inches can quickly cost several thousand euros. A key reason for this is the complex manufacturing of large displays. This is where LG Display’s new technology, called FLiPP, comes into play. The process aims to simplify production and thus lay the foundation for more affordable large OLED screens.
FLiPP Does Without Metal Masks
According to LG Display, FLiPP no longer requires the fine metal masks previously used in OLED production. These masks function like stencils, ensuring that different colors are applied in the designated areas.
However, with large displays, this presents challenges. The masks must also grow, can deform, and require adjustments for different screen sizes. This increases manufacturing effort, which ultimately affects costs.
How the New Process Works
With FLiPP, LG Display takes a different approach. The organic material for red, green, and blue is applied to the surface step by step. Excess material is then removed using UV light. A large metal stencil is no longer necessary.
Additionally, the raw material is expected to be used more efficiently. For laptop displays of comparable size, according to LG Display, up to 64 percent more displays can be obtained from the raw glass. This results in less waste, which could reduce production costs.

More Brightness and Lower Power Consumption
In addition to simpler manufacturing, LG Display cites other advantages of the technology. Compared to OLED panels with metal masks, FLiPP is said to achieve up to 1.6 times more brightness under the same conditions. The company also promises a 2.4 times longer lifespan and 13 percent less power consumption.

According to LG Display, these values are made possible by larger luminous color areas. They can produce more light and thus improve the display’s performance.
Initial Use in Smaller Displays
FLiPP is particularly interesting for large screens. According to LG Display, the process is suitable for displays ranging from one to 100 inches. Initially, however, the technology will be used in IT devices such as monitors and tablets.
Later, large TVs could also benefit from the process. LG Display has not yet announced when the first TV models with FLiPP will appear. There are also no details on possible prices at this time.
