An old Nintendo GameCube can still fetch a significant amount of money today. This is demonstrated by a special edition that reportedly sold for several thousand U.S. dollars recently. However, those eager to search their basements or attics shouldn’t celebrate too soon: The key is an extremely rare edition of “Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.”
Special Edition is Extremely Rare
The console from Nintendo is visually distinct from the well-known GameCube versions. As reported by “Engadget,” the collector’s item came in Crystal White instead of the usual Indigo or Black. This is a cream-colored tone that differs from the Pearl White version released in Europe.
More important for today’s value is the limited quantity. Only 150 units of the “Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles” edition are said to exist. According to “Engadget,” they were not available for purchase at the time. Instead, the consoles were awarded in Japan as part of a magazine contest. As a result, they rarely appear on the used market today.

Old Technology That Is Now Really Valuable
Rare GameCube Fetches $7,500
The increasing value of the special edition is evident from other sales. According to “Engadget,” two units were sold this year alone for more than $5,000 each. In May, a GameCube reportedly changed hands for nearly $7,000. The most recently sold unit fetched $7,500, approximately 6,680 euros.
Originally, this special edition included not just the GameCube. The package also contained the game “Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles” and a matching Game Boy Player in Crystal White. This accessory allows Game Boy games to be played on a TV. This addition also makes a complete set so unusual. While the accessory was available separately in other colors, Crystal White is also among the rare variants here. Therefore, anyone who actually owns such a GameCube should also look for the corresponding accessories.

However, the high individual prices do not mean that every GameCube of this edition is automatically worth $7,500. “Engadget” bases its price information on eBay and the collector site Consolevariations. Therefore, the sales mainly show what sums individual buyers have apparently paid. They do not establish a universal market value.
Some Editions are Even More Expensive
The “Final Fantasy” edition is not the only unusual version of the Nintendo console. Among the particularly curious models is a GameCube in Heineken design. As reported by “Engadget,” this special version was created in 2002 for a contest by the beer brand. There were only 100 units, 50 in Indigo and 50 in Jet Black. Such a collector’s item was recently sold for $15,500.
For owners of an old GameCube, these examples do not automatically mean a windfall. The model sold for $7,500 combines a very limited quantity, an unusual color scheme, and the connection to “Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles.” It is precisely this combination that makes the console interesting for collectors.
