Not every loyalty program serves its purpose. PlayStation Stars, for example, never really took off. Sony is now facing the bitter consequences.
For service providers and retailers, it’s no longer enough to offer the best product selection. Customers want to be as closely tied to companies as possible, often through bonus programs. Participation is usually easy, and those who stay committed are rewarded. But this doesn’t always resonate well. Sony’s PlayStation Stars seem to have been nothing more than fleeting shooting stars.
PlayStation Stars Ending Soon
Sony Interactive launched PlayStation Stars in the summer of 2022. It allowed the gaming community to earn points and receive rewards, such as digital collectibles, by making purchases in the PlayStation Store or directly through gameplay. The goal was to bring players together worldwide and “create lasting memories.”
However, as stated in a statement, Sony plans to completely discontinue PlayStation Stars in its “current version” soon. The company does not provide specific reasons. They have only mentioned that they have learned a lot since its introduction by analyzing player activities.
The statement reads: “As a company, we constantly evolve along with players and industry trends. Based on this evaluation, we have decided to refocus our efforts and discontinue the current version of PlayStation Stars […].”

What Players Need to Know Now
Active participants of PlayStation Stars and potential interested parties need to be aware of the following points and dates:
- The program no longer accepts new members.
- Those who cancel now cannot rejoin the current Stars version and will lose all points accumulated up to that point.
- Members can continue to collect collectibles and points to increase their status until July 23, 2025. After that, no new campaigns, rewards, or status benefits will be available.
- On November 2, 2026, PlayStation Stars, as we know it, will end permanently. Until then, points can still be redeemed, provided they haven’t expired.
What’s Next?
According to Sony’s statements, players will not have to permanently forgo a bonus program. “We will continue to evaluate our key insights from this program and try to build on them,” Sony writes, hinting at a new, revised loyalty program. However, there are currently no details available.
