The Nintendo Switch 2 has just been released and has already set a new record. The sales figures are impressive.
The Nintendo Switch 2 has only been available in stores since June 5, 2025. This ended a multi-year wait for fans, and for the manufacturer, it’s the first new console in eight years. The anticipation among the international gaming community is directly reflected in immense sales figures. In fact, the Nintendo Switch 2 has broken the record for the best launch sales of a new console.
Record for the Nintendo Switch 2 Within 24 Hours
The traditional manufacturer has not yet released official numbers; TECHBOOK has made an inquiry and is still awaiting a response. However, initial figures are already circulating in insider circles, and they are truly impressive: For instance, Nintendo Prime on X (formerly Twitter) reports that the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold more than three million units for the new record—within the first 24 hours of release.
This puts the “Super Mario” creators far ahead of the previous record. Sony held it for the PS4, which sold more than one million units in the first 24 hours when it launched in 2013. As it stands, the next record is already crumbling.
Switch 2 Could Break the Next Record Soon
According to Nintendo Prime, the next milestone could fall quite soon. Sony still holds the record for the most units sold within the first two months, with 4.5 million each for the PS4 and PS5. Since three million Switch 2 units were sold in just one day, it could reach that figure within just a week.
Whether this will happen remains to be seen. Despite the announcement that enough units would be available at launch, the Nintendo Switch 2 is already sold out in many places. Nintendo must quickly restock to meet the enormous demand.

On the Path to Becoming the Most Successful Console of All Time?
Compared to its competitors Sony and Microsoft, the Switch 2 benefits from a different global climate: Both the PS5 and Xbox Series initially struggled with significant component shortages and delivery issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The PS5 could have performed significantly better as a result.

Whether the Nintendo Switch 2 will ultimately secure the record as the best-selling console of all time remains to be seen. The spectacular launch is a good start, but interest must remain consistently high over the years. Currently, the PS2 holds the top spot with 160 million units sold. Nintendo follows closely with the Nintendo DS (154 million) and the first Switch (152 million).
