Removing the protective film from the Nintendo Switch 2 is a mistake. The manufacturer is now explicitly warning against doing so.
It’s long been common practice for new hardware, especially those with screens, to come packaged with a protective film. Many people consider it a normal ritual to peel off this film when unboxing. However, you should not do this with the protective film on the Nintendo Switch 2. It’s about safety—not of the device, but of the users themselves.
Nintendo Switch 2 Protective Film Protects Owners
After a long wait and eight years since the release of its predecessor, the Switch 2 will finally be available on June 5. Fans should not only avoid the mistake of accidentally buying an old Switch, but they should also refrain from removing the protective film on the Nintendo Switch 2. This is stated in the official health and safety information recently released by the manufacturer.
It specifically states: “The screen is covered with a film that prevents shards from scattering in case of damage. Please do not remove.” The protective film on the Nintendo Switch 2 is designed to protect users from flying, sharp, and potentially very dangerous shards in the event of damage.

Not Just Transport Protection
Nintendo issued a similar warning with the first Switch. This may come as a surprise to many, as with many other electronic devices, the protective layer primarily serves to protect the device from scratches or even breaks. That is not the case here. It is therefore assumed to be less robust.

If you still want additional protection for your device, you can optionally purchase protective coatings such as tempered glass. These are already available for the first Nintendo Switch and will surely be available for the upcoming Switch 2 with the appropriate dimensions.
