Nintendo is rolling out a new firmware update for the Switch 2. Along with many smaller changes, Version 22.0.0 introduces a feature that can significantly boost graphics performance, especially on the go.
The Nintendo Switch 2 typically operates with reduced processing power in mobile mode. However, with the firmware update to Version 22.0.0, this changes somewhat. Nintendo has integrated a new operating mode specifically designed for handheld use. The update introduces a new mode that allows for enhanced graphics performance while on the move.
New Boost Mode Lifts Performance Limit
In mobile mode, users can now activate the so-called “Handheld Mode Boost.” This mode makes the console think it is docked and connected to a TV. As a result, the Switch 2 can utilize its full processing power even in handheld mode. This can make a difference, especially for first-generation Switch games that run at only 720p and reduced frame rates on the go. With Handheld Mode Boost activated, the Switch 2 can display these games at 1080p and higher frame rates while mobile. Previously, this was only possible in TV mode.

New Feature Also Has Some Drawbacks
Nintendo notes that some functions may be limited when Boost Mode is active. For instance, the touchscreen may deactivate. The reason: Technically, the console assumes it is connected to a TV. Additionally, the Switch 2 assumes a Pro Controller is being used, even though players are actually using the Joy-Con 2.
Another drawback concerns the battery. The classic handheld mode is designed to consume as little power as possible. With Handheld Mode Boost activated, the console uses its maximum power, increasing energy consumption and draining the battery faster.

Other Updates in Version 22.0.0
In addition to the new graphics mode, the update brings several changes to other console functions. The GameChat, in particular, receives additional features. It is now possible to add more friends to ongoing GameChat sessions. Nintendo also improves the display of the split screen, which now appears in higher quality. The storage management has also been revised. The Switch 2 now shows occupied storage space sorted by file type, considering both internal storage and inserted SD cards.
The patch has been available for download since March 16, 2026. Owners of the original Nintendo Switch also receive the update, albeit with significantly fewer new features.
