At the Nintendo Direct in September 2025, the surprise was big, and now Universal, together with Illumination, is following up: The final trailer for the animated adventure “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” has been released. The film is set to premiere in Germany on April 1, 2026. Mario, Luigi, and their friends are not only returning to the big screen—they’re embarking on an intergalactic adventure.
A sequel was considered likely after the overwhelming success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023). The animated spectacle grossed over $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the most successful video game adaptation of all time. The enormous audience response quickly made it clear: The cinematic potential of the Nintendo universe is far from exhausted.
Mario himself has been one of the most popular figures in video game history for decades. Precisely because the mustachioed plumber with overalls and a belly doesn’t fit the classic hero image, he has enormous identification potential. After a failed live-action film in the 1990s, the triumphant animated comeback finally succeeded in 2023—and now the story is being consistently continued.
A Glimpse into New Galaxies
“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is inspired by the 2007 Wii classic “Super Mario Galaxy.” The game is still considered a milestone in the 3D platforming genre: Mario travels between planets with their own gravity, collects Power Stars, and experiences a cosmic rescue mission with epic music and imaginative level designs.
The film also takes the heroes into space. This time, the focus is initially on Bowser Jr., who is trying to restore his shrunken father to his former glory. Mario and Luigi stand against him—supported by Princess Peach, Toad, and other familiar faces from the Mushroom Kingdom.
The new trailer also hints at appearances by Yoshi and Princess Rosalina, who already played a role in the teaser. With Birdo, the pink, dinosaur-like fan favorite, another cult figure makes her big-screen debut. Numerous references to the game universe—from Mini-Marios to classic power-ups to iconic enemies—are expected to offer fans plenty of recognition value.

The sequel also relies on continuity in the cast: Chris Pratt voices Mario again, Anya Taylor-Joy returns as Princess Peach, and Jack Black lends his distinctive voice to Bowser once more. Charlie Day (Luigi), Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), and Kevin Michael Richardson are also back. The direction is again handled by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic.

Expansion of the Nintendo Film Universe
With the Galaxy adventure, Nintendo is further advancing the expansion of its film universe. A live-action adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” is being developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures. More projects are considered likely—though specific details are not yet known.
Whether “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” can match the tremendous success of its predecessor will be revealed in spring 2026. The final trailer suggests that the next chapter will be bigger, more action-packed, and even more cosmic.
