Alongside State of Play, the PlayStation Showcase is one of Sony’s most important gaming events. Here, the company showcases numerous game trailers as well as innovations in the hardware sector.

Assassin’s Creed: Mirage
Honestly, the “Assassin’s Creed” series is a very personal matter for me; I’ve had some of my best gaming moments with the franchise. That’s why I was really pleased that Sony finally delivered real gameplay footage of “Assassin’s Creed: Mirage” at the PlayStation Showcase 2023. Especially because we finally got a closer look at how the new setting in Baghdad feels, and I must say, the trailer at least gave the impression that AC is returning more to its roots.
And as for the mechanics shown, it seems they have been inspired by the still very good early parts of the series. The video also revealed when we can expect the new Ubisoft game, which is October 12, 2023.
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Finally, there’s a proper trailer for the fantasy RPG “Dragon’s Dogma 2.” The short video already shows some combat sequences and gives an impression of the game world, which looks very much like an open world. As a fan of the first part, I’m personally very excited about Capcom’s sequel.
The trailer is full of nostalgia for the predecessor but promises–in addition to obvious graphical and technical improvements–interesting new features such as new races. The hinted storyline promises a classic gaming hero’s journey, where dragons must be slain and one’s heart reclaimed.
Neva
Few platformers in recent years have impressed me as much as “Gris” (perhaps with the exception of the “Ori” games). With the 2018 release, the Spanish indie studio Nomada made a name for itself, and expectations for the developers’ next project are correspondingly high–mine certainly are. The PlayStation Showcase 2023 offered the first glimpses into the new game.
The new “Neva” trailer immediately gave me goosebumps with its visuals; Nomada has certainly stayed true to itself. The story seems to center around a young woman and a fox-like creature. According to the studio, the human-animal relationship between the two is meant to symbolize the relationship between parents and children.

Arizona Sunshine 2
The first part of “Arizona Sunshine” was the first VR game I was able to explore in depth. When I visited a friend in Vienna, we went to a VR café and were able to fight zombies together in the virtual environment. The experience blew me away so much that I immediately ordered the original Oculus Rift when I got home to keep playing.
But compared to the “Arizona Sunshine 2” trailer, the first part now looks like a tech demo. Graphics and mechanics appear much more refined. Judging by the screenshots, the game can visually compete with non-VR titles. In addition to the familiar shotgun and machete, a flamethrower is now included to help keep zombie hordes at bay. The protagonist also gets a companion in the form of a four-legged friend named Buddy.
If the game truly delivers on what the trailer promises, I seriously need to consider whether investing in a PS5 plus PSVR 2 is worth it…
Alan Wake 2
Whenever I think back to the first part from 2010, I still get chills. The dark, eerie, and dense atmosphere kept me glued to the screen. One of the first title’s greatest strengths is its pacing–one moment you’re wandering through beautiful mountain forests, only to be attacked by nightmarish monsters a few minutes later.
Judging by the trailer, the franchise will stay true to itself with the sequel. In the town of Bright Falls, FBI agent Anderson investigates a series of murders. She discovers pages from a horror story that become reality. Everything seems to point to the horror author Alan Wake, who disappeared without a trace 13 years ago. Wake is trapped in a nightmare world and writes the story to change the reality around him so he can escape.
The special feature compared to the predecessor: Players can take on the roles of Anderson and Wake and play in any order. I’m curious to see how this mechanic works and whether the tension remains. However, I already get chills thinking about how Alan Wake’s horror story will unfold in the surreal “Dark Place.”
