First defeat the boss, then watch a commercial? A new Microsoft patent application describes a system that could interrupt PC and console games for advertising.

Microsoft has published a patent application that describes an unusual model for PC and console games. At its core, it involves linking gameplay time to a credit system. When these credits run out, the game could pause and display ads before unlocking more playtime.

The U.S. patent application US 2026/0260258 A1 is titled “Contextually Aware Management of Interactive Software Application Access.” According to the description, users initially receive so-called credits for a certain period or game progress. After watching an ad clip, the system would grant new credits, allowing further gameplay.

Ads Should Use Suitable Moments

Unlike traditional ad interruptions, the system is not designed to intervene based on a fixed timer. Instead, it analyzes the current game state and looks for situations where an interruption would be least disruptive. Microsoft cites examples such as loading screens, pause menus, completed missions, or the end of a level.

The duration of a credit can vary. The patent documents mention 60 minutes for tutorials, 30 minutes for single-player campaigns, and 20 minutes for online multiplayer sessions. Additionally, the granted playtime could depend on how long the displayed ad runs or what ad content is played.

Whether the Patent Will Ever Become Reality

Microsoft also describes ways to automatically identify suitable ad timing. Developers could directly mark such moments. For older games, systems are mentioned that analyze image, audio, and state data to independently recognize appropriate interruption points. A countdown before an ad is also part of the concept.

So far, however, it is merely a patent application. Microsoft has not announced an introduction for Xbox, Windows, Game Pass, or specific games. Nevertheless, the document shows that the company is exploring concepts already known from mobile games: ads in exchange for additional playtime or other benefits. Whether such a model would gain acceptance on consoles and PCs remains uncertain.
