Sony is apparently expanding its advertising activities around the PlayStation. Job postings suggest that ads could play a significantly larger role in the PlayStation ecosystem in the future.
Sony Seeks Advertising Partners Outside the Gaming Industry
Sony Interactive Entertainment is currently building a new team called “SIE Media Solutions.” Several job postings indicate that the company wants to significantly expand its advertising marketing. The focus is explicitly on so-called “non-endemic brands,” meaning companies that have not previously had a direct connection to the gaming industry.
Brands mentioned include those from consumer goods, retail, automotive, financial services, and telecommunications. In the future, ads might not only appear for games or hardware but also for beverages, fast food, or mobile offers. According to the job postings, ads are to be displayed through the console’s user interface, the PlayStation Store, and streaming services. Sony is likely to use analytics and user data to target ads effectively.

Are Streaming Services in Crisis?
Why Advertising Is Becoming More Attractive for Sony
The main reason lies in the rising costs of game development. Modern AAA titles require increasingly higher budgets, while many players are sensitive to price increases for games or subscriptions. Additional advertising revenue could help open up new revenue streams without immediately raising prices further.
Industry experts see significant potential in this. Although gaming is among the most-used digital entertainment forms, advertising revenue per usage minute is still significantly lower than in social networks. For companies like Sony, this opens up a market that has so far been only partially tapped.

Advertising on the PlayStation Is Not a New Idea
In fact, Sony has been experimenting with advertising concepts for many years. As early as 2008, the company integrated ads into “WipEout HD” and the online platform “PlayStation Home.” Both projects, however, faced significant criticism from the community. In 2024, ads on the PS5’s home screen also sparked discussions, which Sony later called a mistake.
Additionally, a patent was published in 2026 describing ads during loading times. Microsoft with Xbox and Electronic Arts have also been exploring similar concepts for some time. Whether Sony will actually implement its current plans and to what extent ads will appear on the PlayStation in the future remains open. An official announcement from the company is still pending.
